Section 2: CHILLER PLANT

This Section of the Energy Efficiency Manual is for everyone involved in the operation, maintenance, and design of central air conditioning systems, refrigeration plants, and industrial cooling plants. These include chilled water systems and central direct-expansion systems. You will become an expert in making your cooling plant efficient.

Cooling accounts for a large fraction of the energy cost of modern buildings. In warm and humid climates, cooling and dehumidifying may account for more than half of a facility’s energy cost. Cooling is a major cost of many industrial processes.

There is a rich field of opportunity for improving the cooling efficiency of existing buildings and industrial plants. Many improvements in cooling technology have made it possible to build new facilities with improved cooling efficiency. There are also many techniques for improving the efficiency of existing cooling equipment. The energy conservation measures in this Section range from simple adjustments to major plant modifications.
